Dale and I are up at 0 dark 30 (about 4 AM PST) to head out to Lincoln Airpark to get ready for the first day of competition. We walk the course in the early morning.
After the walk, we hung around in grid for a while to watch some of the other competitors race. There was a little entertainment from the 'local' clown.
I was scheduled to work 2nd heat and Dale was working in the 3rd heat and we ran in the last heat (5th). It makes for a long day filled with interruptions and not really a chance to take a 'break'.
The weather was very nice with the temperature in the 80's. When I was in Dale's ITR, I was the first driver and would frequently charge out there on my first run and forget that we have cold tires in the rear. This time, it was Dale's turn to slide around on the first run.

Tom made a comment that I wasn't trying very hard. The Civic had all 4 wheels on the ground in the turns. We figured out why all 4 wheels stayed on the ground, a combination of high grip on this surface and the Bridgestone RE-11 tires. It was a little late to make much difference for today. Both of us end the day around mid-pack and I had a cone on my fast run.

This was an eventful heat. Heyward Wagner was in a good position when his co-driver goes out to take a run and in the first sweeper, the outside back wheel falls off and rolls off and the car spins around. I hear the wheel came off at the hub and it wasn't a case of wheels not torqued down. Andy Hollis comes to the rescue with the replacement parts and Heyward is able to complete the event. Way to go Andy!
The forecast for Wednesday is 40% chance of rain in the afternoon. Should be interesting.
