2009 San Diego Tour - Saturday

We arrive bright and early, unpack the car, get it teched and walk the course again. The car is ready to go. I'm feeling tense - big day, lots of attention, parked right in front of the Bridgestone hospitality truck and the Allstars spokesmodels will be hanging around.

The field is larger than last year. There are enough entrants to provide trophies 6 deep. The grid looks a little like Topeka last year with a whole string of Civics in a row.

It's time to race. We have a Bridgestone umbrella girl (Jennifer) staying near us all the time to provide shade and make the other guys jealous. I could get used to this kind of treatment.

The course is a transitional one with very few straight sections and a whole bunch of off camber turns thrown in for good measure. Just the kind of stuff that the Civic would thrive on - well except the off camber stuff. It reminds me a lot of the East Coast courses that I used to see a lot of.

Before we run in the 2nd heat, the pavement is already breaking up, so the course is altered to avoid the broken parts. We go out to walk again to see what the changes to the course are.

I'm out to take my first run and it's a decent run - except I hit a cone. I go and hit the same cone on my second run, so my third run is a conservative run to keep me in the event for tomorrow. It's good enough to keep me in 4th place at the end of Saturday. Jason is running conservatively and finishes in 11th place.

The course ends up being changed again later in the day because of more break up. This makes the course even faster. So the pax results will not be representative.

So at the end of the first day Stephen was sitting in a solid 4th, well in the running for day 2 runs and Jason was sitting in 11th waiting for his day 1 jitters out and ready for a fast second day.

Rumors passed at the Bridgestone trailer that Jason finished 11th in the commemoration of the RE-11's first west coast Tour but the rumors have yet to be confirmed... =)
