So September 26th we got the chance to race at a new venue for our region. The San Bernardino Airport located just 10 minutes away from where we store the car so the engine barely warms up by the time I can get the car to the lot!
I raced the practice solo getting the car shook down after nationals making sure everything was all still good. I was also able to get all the tires OPR scrubbed off that we picked up from Lincoln so the tires were ready to go. Also it was my first time back in the civic for some time being super busy with planning my wedding.
On Sunday, Stephen and I were back in the seat and the sun was up early as the temps were quickly reaching over 100 before noon! The car was running well during our regular champ runs but that is where everything normal left the building!
So we also decided to run X runs as well in the afternoon to get a bit more seat time in the car. On Stephens 4th run as he took one of the higher speed left hand sweepers the car goes into a full spin and we see one of the wheels flying another direction! I was watching from the grid so I grabbed a jack and hurried to find someone who could drive me out onto the course. At first look I thought we had a lugnut failure or a wheelbolt failure but in face the complete hub came apart into two piece and the wheel went flying! With 2 jacks we were able to roll the civic on the 3 wheels still attached out to a safe area so that everyone could continue to race.
After the race we ran to the local parts store to grab a rear hub to replace the broken one and we installed it and able to hobble the car back to the padlock. We quickly put the car up on jack stands and all started taking a look to see if we would be able to drive the car home. Everyone agrees we should be able to make it home so we remove the rear sway bar since it it interfering with the movement of the rear suspension and we double check and tighten everything down and we hobble the car to riverside.
SO this is how our adventure begins. First thing first is to evaluate the damage and create a plan of action to fix the car before the November race. Oh and I need to get married sometime in between there. =)
